Survodutide

In trials

GLP-1 and glucagon dual agonist (investigational)

Last updated 29 October 2026

Survodutide is an experimental weight loss and liver drug that acts on two hormone receptors, GLP-1 and glucagon. It is in late stage trials for obesity and for a fatty liver condition. It holds no marketing authorisation yet.

Key points

  • Survodutide is a dual agonist: it activates the GLP-1 receptor, like semaglutide, and the glucagon receptor as well.
  • It is being studied for obesity and for MASH, a form of fatty liver disease.
  • In mid stage trials it produced average weight loss of around 15 percent, and phase 3 trials are underway.
  • It is not approved anywhere, so in the UK it is available only within a clinical trial.

Quick facts

How it works

The GLP-1 side lowers appetite and slows the stomach, the same pathway as the licensed weight loss medicines. Adding the glucagon receptor is thought to raise energy use and help clear fat from the liver, which is why it is being studied for a liver condition as well as for weight. How the two effects balance out over time is still being worked out in trials.

What the evidence shows

Mid stage trials reported meaningful average weight loss that rose with the dose, and the liver programme is a particular focus. What is not yet available is the full set of phase 3 results, the long term safety picture, or a clear comparison with the medicines already licensed. So the early signals are promising but not yet settled.

What it does not settle

  • The phase 3 results and final efficacy are not yet published.
  • Long term safety and tolerability are not established.
  • How it compares with licensed obesity and liver treatments is unknown.

Side effects

Common

  • As with other medicines acting on gut hormones, stomach effects such as nausea and diarrhoea are expected, especially while the dose is raised.

Less common but serious

  • Because it is investigational, its full safety profile is still being established in trials.
  • Products sold online as survodutide are unlicensed, and their dose and contents cannot be verified.

Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

UK legal status and access

Survodutide has no marketing authorisation, so it is not prescribed by registered clinics or pharmacies. In the UK the only route is a clinical trial. Products sold online are unlicensed and have not been through the checks that apply to a licensed medicine.

Common questions

What is survodutide?

An experimental drug that acts on the GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, studied for obesity and for a fatty liver condition.

How is it different from semaglutide?

Semaglutide acts on one receptor, GLP-1. Survodutide adds a second, the glucagon receptor, which may also help the liver.

Can I get it in the UK?

Not as a prescribed medicine. It is investigational, so the only route is taking part in a clinical trial.

The licensed route

If you are looking for a weight loss medicine now, semaglutide and tirzepatide are licensed and available through registered providers.

Factual reference only, not medical advice. We give no dosing for unlicensed compounds.
