Research use

AMPK activator (exercise mimetic)

Last updated 29 October 2026

AICAR is a research compound that switches on AMPK, the cell's energy sensor, and is sometimes called an exercise mimetic. Most of what is known comes from animal studies. It is not a licensed medicine in the UK, and it is banned in sport.

Key points

  • AICAR activates AMPK, an enzyme that senses cell energy, which is linked to burning fat and using glucose.
  • It is sometimes described as an exercise pill, based largely on a mouse study.
  • Human data is sparse and mostly from older heart surgery research, not weight loss.
  • It is not a licensed medicine in the UK, and it is prohibited in sport at all times.

How it works

AMPK is switched on when a cell is short of energy, prompting it to burn fat, take up glucose and build more mitochondria, much as exercise does. AICAR mimics the signal that activates AMPK. The hope has been to gain some of the metabolic effects of exercise without the exercise, but this is far from proven in people.

What the evidence shows

Most findings are from cell and animal studies, including the mouse work behind the exercise pill label. Human evidence is limited and comes mainly from older research in heart surgery. There are no human weight loss trials and no established dose.

What it does not settle

  • There are no human trials for weight loss or performance.
  • There is no established human dose or long term safety data.
  • Whether the animal effects occur in people is unknown.

Side effects

Less common but serious

  • Low blood sugar has been seen in animal studies, especially at higher doses, and there are possible effects on the heart.
  • Because there is no licensed product, the dose, purity and contents of material bought online cannot be verified.

Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

UK legal status and access

AICAR has no UK marketing authorisation, so it is not a licensed medicine and is not offered by registered clinics or pharmacies. It is sold online as a research chemical.

Common questions

What is AICAR?

A research compound that activates AMPK, the cell's energy sensor, sometimes called an exercise mimetic.

Does it replace exercise?

No. The exercise pill idea comes from animal studies, and there is no human evidence it delivers the benefits of exercise.

Is it allowed in sport?

No. It is on the WADA Prohibited List at all times as a metabolic modulator.

The licensed route

There is no pill that replaces exercise. A registered clinician or qualified coach can advise on safe, effective ways to improve fitness and metabolism.

Factual reference only, not medical advice. We give no dosing for unlicensed compounds.
