5-Amino-1MQ

Research use

NNMT inhibitor (oral, not a peptide)

Last updated 29 October 2026

5-Amino-1MQ is an experimental oral compound that blocks an enzyme called NNMT, which is active in fat tissue. It is studied for obesity and metabolism, almost entirely in animals so far. It is not a peptide, and it has no UK marketing authorisation.

Key points

  • 5-Amino-1MQ is a small molecule, taken by mouth, that inhibits the enzyme NNMT.
  • NNMT is most active in fat tissue, so the compound is studied for obesity and metabolism.
  • Almost all the evidence is from mice and cell studies, with no completed human trials.
  • It is not a licensed medicine in the UK and is sold only for research use.

Quick facts

What it is
NNMT inhibitor, oral small molecule (not a peptide)
Studied for
Obesity and metabolism
UK status
Not a licensed medicine; sold for research use
Human evidence
None; mouse and cell studies only

How it works

The enzyme NNMT uses up nicotinamide, a building block the body recycles into NAD+, a molecule central to energy. By blocking NNMT, the compound is thought to leave more nicotinamide available and to free up a methyl donor involved in controlling genes. In mice this has been linked to resisting weight gain. Whether it does anything similar in people is untested.

What the evidence shows

The evidence is almost entirely preclinical: mouse studies and cell work, including research on blocking NNMT in diet related obesity. There are no completed human trials, no established dose, and no clear safety picture in people.

What it does not settle

  • There are no human trials of benefit or safety.
  • There is no established human dose.
  • How it compares with NAD+ precursors such as NMN or NR has not been tested in people.

Side effects

Common

  • There is no systematic human safety data. Animal studies reported few serious problems, and reports of stomach upset or changes in energy or sleep are anecdotal.

Less common but serious

  • Because there is no licensed product, the dose, purity and contents of material bought online cannot be verified.

Report any suspected side effect through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

UK legal status and access

5-Amino-1MQ has no UK marketing authorisation, so it is not a licensed medicine and is not offered by registered clinics or pharmacies. It is sold online as a research chemical, with no checks on quality or dose.
